Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - With a 12 strikeout performance, Eric Surkamp was sensational in his final 2009 performance as he pitched his Augusta GreenJackets to a 2-1 win over the Rome Braves in front of 4,909 fans on Fan Appreciation Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Thanks to the masterpiece, Surkamp (11-5) finishes his season with his first nine-inning complete game of the year, allowing a run on two hits and no walks while finishing with 12 strikeouts. In his last six starts, Surkamp has recorded 54 strikeouts in 38.1 innings and is 5-0 in those outings.

His biggest mistake came in the third when Rome's Matt Kramer drilled the first pitch of the inning over the left-field wall to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. Surkamp settled down and didn't give up another hit until Luis Sumoza's two-out, two-strike single in the ninth.

The GreenJackets bailed out their winningest pitcher by sending seven to the plate and scoring twice in the fifth to take the lead. Johnny Monell led off the frame with a double and scored on Charlie Culberson's bases-loaded two-bagger to give the Jackets their first and only lead of the night. Though the GreenJackets recorded just one more hit past the fifth inning, Surkamp made the lead stand. He retired Rome in order in six of his nine innings on the hill.

Dimasther Delgado (5-7) was solid for Rome in six innings, nearly matching Surkamp's strikeout total with eight. He allowed two runs and five hits while walking a pair in the loss.

In their penultimate game of the 2009 season, the GreenJackets send Ari Ronick (7-5, 2.49) to the mound on Sunday evening to face Randall Delgado (4-10, 4.50). First pitch comes at 5:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. You may purchase seats to any of the remaining 2009 home contests by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
