Surf Skid Extends to Four

Tony Gsell and the Somerset Patriots defeated the Atlantic City Surf Wednesday night, 11-5 to take a 3.5 game lead in the South Division. Gsell went 3-5 with six RBI and is batting .375 with five homeruns and 11 rbi in seven games against the Surf this season.

The Somerset Patriots jumped out to an early lead with Edgar Clements and Robinson Cancel going back-to-back in the top of the second. A walk and two batters later, Tony Gsell hit a two-run blast giving Somerset a 4-0 lead.

Lauro Felix led off the third with a walk and Ben Candelaria made Patriot starter Steve Falteisek pay with a two-run shot over the right field wall to put the surf within two.

Gsell struck again in the fourth taking a Zwirchitz fastball off the top off the left field wall for a two-run double giving the Patriots a 6-2 cshion.

The Surf rallied in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI single from Lauro Felix to score Creighton Gubanich and an RBI double off the bat of Ric Johnson to score Brody Jackson. Candelaria followed with a single to score Felix but Ric Johnson was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

With a two-run lead and two outs in the ninth, Jeff Nettles hit a two-run double to give the Patriots a 9-5 lead. After Jeff Nettles doubled, Gsell hit his second two-run homer of the game to put the Patriots up by seven runs.

Somerset starter Steve Falteisek earned his seventh win of the season giving up five runs on nine hits through seven innings of work.

Matthew Schwager tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Surf starter Andy Zwirchitz took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits striking out four and walking two in five innings pitched.

With the win, the Somerset Patriots improve to 19-12 and the Atlantic City Surf fall to 16-16.
