New Jersey Jackals News Release

Atlantic City, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals led 4-0 early, but the Atlantic City Surf scored the game's next six runs as the Jackals fell on the road by a score of 6-5 on Saturday night at Bernie Robbins Stadium.

For the third straight night against the Surf, the Jackals jumped out to an early lead. Atlantic City starting pitcher J.C. Huguet loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning before the Jackals took a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by DH Vic Davilla. In the second inning, New Jersey plated two more runs on an RBI single by CF Zack Smithlin and a sacrifice fly off the bat of LF Luke Allen to make it 4-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Surf got on the board. DH Eddie Kim led off with a double, which RF Josh Burrus followed with a single to put runners on the corners. With the next batter, 2B Brad Thoma at the plate, Jackals C Craig Maddox's throw on a Burrus attempted steal sailed into center field, allowing Kim to score and Burrus to advance to third. Later in the frame, CF Billy Kovatch laced an RBI double to pull Atlantic City within two at 4-2.

After two scoreless innings, Atlantic City cut the Jackals lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. LF Joe Burke singled with one out. With two outs, C William Plaza singled and Kim walked to load the bases. The next batter, Burrus, hit a grounder to short which New Jersey's Casey Gordon bobbled, allowing Burke to score.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, reliever Brandon Martin replaced New Jersey starter Juan Done and loaded the bases before recording his first out. With one down, Hunter Davis entered and surrendered a two-run single by Burrus and an RBI base hit by 2B Brad Thoma as the Surf took a 6-4 lead.

In the top of the ninth, New Jersey's comeback effort got a jump start with back-to-back singles by C Craig Maddox and RF Marcos Rodriguez. With runners on first and third and no outs, pinch hitter Matt Lauderdale hit a grounder that looked like a sure double play, but the relay throw was launched wide of first base. Maddox had already scored on the play to make it a 6-5 game, but Lauderdale was thrown out at second upon trying to advance on the errant throw. With two outs, Sanders singled and stole second base to put himself in scoring position, but AC reliever Walker Whitley retired Smithlin to notch the save and end the threat.

Juan Done started for New Jersey and pitched well, going seven innings and allowing just three runs - two earned - on eight hits while walking three batters and striking out four. Atlantic City's Kyle George (2-1) got the win in relief as he hurled a perfect eighth inning. Martin (1-3) took the loss for New Jersey.

Offensively, Rodriguez had a good night for the Jackals, going 3-4 with a run scored. Smithlin chipped in with two hits in three at bats. For the Surf, Burrus finished 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Jackals and Surf conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey's Isaac Pavlik takes the hill against Atlantic City's Adam Cox. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
