
Pennell Sinks Skyhawks With Single In Tenth

AUGUSTA, N.J. - Vinny Pennell's RBI-single with two outs in the top of the tenth proved to be the difference as the Nashua Pride defeated the Sussex Skyhawks 3-2 on Saturday evening at Skylands Park.
Adam Piechowski (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Pride, and Andrew Weimer chalked up his eleventh save of the season. Michael Laluna (0-1) took the loss for Sussex.
With two outs in the top of the tenth inning and the scored tied 2-2, Luis Rodriguez walked. Jack Joffrion followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second. Pennell then worked a full count and with the runners in motion, singled up the middle scoring Rodriguez to give Nashua (18-22) a 3-2 lead. Weimer shut down Sussex in the bottom of the tenth to save the victory.
The Skyhawks (22-19) got on the board against Nashua starter Hideki Nagasaka in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alex Frazier lined an RBI-double to left field, scoring Kevin Rios and Jorge Moreno, to make the score 2-0 in favor of Sussex.
After being shutout through the first seven innings by Sussex starter Michael Rogers, Nashua finally broke through in the top of the eighth. Jerod Edmondson led off with a single to left field. Luis Rodriguez followed with a two-run blast off the scoreboard in left to tie the game 2-2.
Nagasaka and Rogers were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first seven and a half innings. Nagasaka gave up two runs on five hits through seven innings. He walked one and struck out four. Rogers gave up two runs on five hits over eight innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Neither starter factored into the decision.
After a day off on Sunday, Nashua and Sussex return to action Monday in Nashua for the first game of a two-game series. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
Sussex returns to action at Skylands Park on Wednesday for a 7:05 p.m. match up with first place Quebec.
