ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 1, 2003) – The Atlantic City Surf announced today that outfielder Brian Simmons has been signed by the San Diego Padres organization and will report to Triple-A Portland immediately.

The Surf also announced the signing of infielder Eddie Lara, a former Atlantic League All-Star with the Long Island Ducks in 2000.

Simmons, who already had 119 games of Major League experience prior to this season, batted .314 (11-35) with five RBI in nine games played with the Surf this season.

He becomes the first Surf player this year to sign with a Major League organization.

Lara makes his second stint in the Atlantic League after batting .273 with nine home runs and 61 RBI in 2000 for the Ducks to earn a spot on the North Division All-Star squad.

The Bani, Dominican Republic, native, spent the past two seasons in the independent Northern League and Central League.

"Although we are sad to lose a player of Brian Simmons' caliber from our team, we wish him the best of luck in this opportunity with the Padres organization," said Surf general manager Mario Perrucci.
