Atlantic City Surf News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 1, 2003) â Bridgeport starter Brad Cornett tossed a complete-game gem to lead the Bluefish over the Atlantic City Surf, 10-1, Sunday afternoon at the Sandcastle.
Cornett (1-1) had pinpoint control throughout the contest, walking none and striking out five while scattering eight hits. His shutout bid was spoiled in the ninth inning when Ozzie Timmons roped a solo homer to centerfield for Atlantic City's lone run of the game.
The Bluefish bats pounded out 14 hits to give Cornett more than enough support.
Bridgeport tallied the first runs of the game in the third inning as Rolo Avila lined a single that plated Tony Rodriguez, who reached on a single. The next batter, Jose Amadao, stepped up and drove in Avila on a base-hit to put the Bluefish up 2-0.
Amado hurt Atlantic City once again two innings later with a two-run home run to left field in the fifth, giving Bridgeport a four-run cushion that would prove to be more than enough for Cornett.
Surf hurler Brian Williams (1-1) allowed four runs off six hits through six innings pitched, striking out two and walking three in the process.
Avila paced the Bluefish with three hits and three runs scored while Tony Rodriguez added three hits and two RBI. Angel Espada was the lone batter in the Bridgeport lineup without a hit in the game.
Timmons and Raul Marval led the Surf, who fall to 14-14 on the season, with two hits apiece. The Bluefish improve to 13-14 on the year with the win.
The game was started after a one-hour, 44-minute rain delay.
ON DECK: The Surf and the Bluefish resume their series on Monday, June 2, for a 6:35 p.m., contest at the Sandcastle. A fireworks show sponsored by Commerce Bank will follow the game.
