June 1, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors split their doubleheader with the Berkshire Black Bears, with the Ambassadors winning the first game 7-2 and the Black Bears taking the second contest 5-4.
The Ambassadors jumped on Black Bear starter Tony Harden in the first game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second, and following that up with four more in the third. In the third, Vic Davilla singled with one out, followed by a Ryan Bordenick single. Mike Singletary, playing his first game for the Ambassadors, then singled home Davilla. Brian Macchi followed with a two-run double. Singletary went 3-3 in the game, with two singles and a monster home run in the fifth, over the screen in left field.
Ambassador pitcher Mike Riley pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five. He picked up the win, his first of the season, while Harden took his first loss.
The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game. They loaded the bases with no one out, but could only muster the one run off Ambassador starter Chris Zallie. Berkshire starter Dan Henderson cruised until he ran into trouble in the fifth inning, where he lost a 3-0 lead. The Ambassadors had big two out hits from Jorge Diaz, Ender Gonzalez and Mike Singletary to score the runs and give the Ambassadors a 4-3 lead. But the Black Bears came right back in the top of the sixth inning, chasing Zallie from the game with a lead-off single by Ryan Jones. Orlando Encarnacion came in to relieve Zallie and loaded the bases. He then walked Raul Cruz to force Jones home and tie the game. Chris Briones followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Black Bears the 5-4 lead.
Matt Ballie got the win in relief, pitching two and a third innings and allowing one run. It was his first win of the season, and the first for the Black Bears. Encarnacion got the loss, his first of the season.
The Ambassadors finished their series with Berkshire, taking two of three. They will take a 4-3 record into a three game series with the Brockton Rox at Bicentennial Park. Tomorrow night is the first game of the series, game time is 7:05. It is guarantee win night, which means that if the Ambassadors lose, fans can get a ticket to any Ambassador home game.
