Surf defeat Patriots 2-1 in pitchers duel

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ- The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 2-1 in front of 1,246 fans at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Somerset broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead when shortstop Nick Ortiz ripped a two out solo home run (8) over the left field wall.

Atlantic City then answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead when second baseman Demetrius Heath singled to left, stole second and scored on a one out two run home run (16) to left by shortstop Raul Marval.

Surf starter Lincoln Mikkelsen (14-5) picked up the win allowing only one run on five hits while striking out ten and walking one in eight innings pitched. Patriots starter Sam Mcconnell (1-4) suffered the loss giving up two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking one in seven innings of work. Surf reliever Jaime Tricoglou pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the year.

With the loss the Patriots dropped to 25-29 in the second half and 58-59 on the 2006 season while the Surf improved to 31-21 in the second half and 64-51 overall.
