
Bluefish top Bears 5-2

NEWARK, NJ - September 13, 2006 - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Bridgeport Bluefish 5-2 Wednesday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Newark opened the game with three base hits and a walk, however were only able to plate one run on an RBI double by third baseman Victor Rodriguez scoring shortstop Jack Santora to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead. Second baseman Matt Brunson led off the game with a single, and designated hitter Will Pennyfeather singled following Santora's walk, however Brunson was caught stealing second base, and Pennyfeather was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the double.
Bridgeport followed with five unanswered runs started by a two-run home run by shortstop Deivi Cruz, his eighth of the season, in the bottom of the first. The Bluefish would add two more runs in the second inning when catcher Hector Kulian scored on a throwing error to second base by Bears catcher Victor Valencia, attempting to throw out shortstop Bryant Nelson allowing Nelson to reach third base. Nelson scored on a wild pitch later in the at-bat giving Bridgeport the 4-1 lead. Center-fielder Tony Mota ripped a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to complete the scoring, and put the Bluefish ahead 5-1.
Newark added a run in the top of the seventh when center-fielder Anthony Sanders scored on a groundout by Santora to cut the lead to 5-2. Santora finished the game 1-for-3 with a single, walk, RBI, and run scored, while Brunson went 3-for-5 with three singles.
David Shepard (5-14) took the loss after pitching six innings allowing five runs, three earned, on ten hits, while T.J. Mathews (12-6) allowed one run on seven hits in six innings striking out five to earn the victory. Jimmy Journal pitched a scoreless ninth inning striking out three and walking one to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Bears and Bluefish will play the final game of the three-game series Thursday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
