Chico Outlaws News Release

The San Diego Surf Dawgs Sunday looked like anything but the Golden Baseball League's last place team, using a season-high 16 hits to beat the Chico Outlaws 11-7 at Nettleton Stadium. It was only the second time all season that the Surf Dawgs scored in double digits this season, and it tied a season high. The win wasn't enough to pull San Diego out of the GBL's cellar, though, as the Surf Dawgs are now 10-20.

The Outlaws (17-13) entered the game on a seven-game winning streak and they held sole possession of second place in the GBL, just two games behind the front-running Reno Silver Sox. Chico's loss, coupled with Long Beach's victory Sunday over Yuma, sinks the Outlaws back into third place, three games behind Reno. The first half of the GBL season will expire in 10 games, and the league's top team will earn an automatic bid to the championship series. Sunday's loss, along with Long Beach's win, hurt Chico's chances of securing the automatic bid.

Things started off well for the Outlaws, as they scored two runs apiece in the second and third innings and jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Jason Van Meetren's two-run homer scored Craig Kuzmic in the second, while Desi Wilson and Kuzmic smacked RBI doubles in the third.

After the Surf Dawgs scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth, the game was knotted at four and it stayed that way until the home team surrendered five runs in the seventh inning. Matt Maloney hit a two-run homer and three batters later Kevin Ciarrachi crushed a three-run shot to give San Diego a commanding 9-4 lead. The visitors scored twice more in the eighth inning on Maloney's RBI single and an RBI groundout from Tony Garcia. Maloney finished the game 3 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

The Outlaws made an attempt at a comeback in the eighth inning when Jason Matteucci hit his second home run in as many days, a three-run shot to right field. Matteucci finished the night 3 for 5 with three RBI and Lino Garcia was 3 for 4. That was all the offense the Outlaws could muster, though, as San Diego closer Josh Rummonds retired Chico in order in the ninth to lock down the victory and put a halt to the Surf Dawgs seven game losing streak.

Reliever Jake McKinley (0-1) took the loss for the Outlaws after surrendering all five of San Diego's runs in the seventh inning. The winner was Surf Dawgs reliever Marcos Mendoza (2-4), who gave up three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

In tomorrow's series finale, Jose Canseco is expected to make his GBL debut as the Surf Dawgs' designated hitter and the Outlaws will be hosting an Independence Day fireworks show. The game is sold out. Nick Singleton (4-2, 2.43 ERA) is scheduled to start for the home team and San Diego is planning to send former major leaguer Steve Smyth to the mound. Game time is 7:05 at Nettleton Stadium.
