San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
San Diego snapped their seven-game losing streak today in Chico, defeating the Outlaws 11-7 at Nettleton Stadium before a crowd of 1,122. The Surf Dawgs slugged their way to victory, hitting three home runs in the game. Marcos Mendoza (2-4) picked up the win in relief and Jacob McKinley (0-1) took the loss for Chico.
The Dawgs would get on the board first yet again when Johnny Day doubled in the first inning and then stole third. After a walk to center fielder Seth Pietsch, Scott Goodman hit a sacrifice fly to left to score the first run of the game. After one it was 1-0 San Diego.
That lead would hold until the bottom of the second inning when catcher Craig Kuzmic doubled. Left fielder Jason Van Meetren then hit a two-run home run to give Chico the lead, 2-1.
Chico wasn't done yet because they score two more in the bottom half of the third. Jason Matteucci hit a double to start the inning. After Bobby Gandolfo grounded out, Desi Wilson would double in Matteucci and it was 3-1 Chico. Wilson would come around to score on a Kuzmic double to make it 4-1 Outlaws.
In the fourth, Matt Maloney doubled to start the inning and would later score on a Kevin Ciarrachi single to right to bring the Surf Dawgs within two. The hit by Ciarrachi was his first as a member of the Surf Dawgs.
The long ball brought San Diego back into the game in the fifth inning. Goodman hit a two-run blast to right field following a Seth Pietsch walk to pull San Diego even with the Outlaws at four.
In the seventh the Dawgs would score five runs to take the lead for good. Pietsch led off the inning with a single and he would score on a Matt Maloney two-run home run to make it 6-4 San Diego. They weren't done yet. Richard Quihuis-Bell walked and then Victor Roldan singled to put two on for catcher Kevin Ciarrachi. Ciarrachi hit a three-run home run to make it 9-4 Surf Dawgs.
San Diego would add two more in the top of the eighth and Chico would add three more in the bottom of the eighth on a three-run home run by Matteucci to make it 11-7. Josh Rummonds would come in and pitch a scoreless ninth for San Diego.
Matt Maloney finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI, a home run, and two runs scored. The 16 San Diego hits would be the most this season in one game and their 11 runs tied a season high.
Jose Canseco will join the team tomorrow in the finale versus the Outlaws. The Dawgs (10-20) will look to try and draw a split in the four-game series before heading over to Reno. Newcomer Steve Smyth, who pitched with San Diego last season, will get the ball tomorrow and Nick Singleton (4-2) will throw for the Outlaws (17-13). First pitch is at 7:05 PT.
