San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
(Pleasanton, CA January 19, 2007) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that San Diego Surf Dawg pitching coach, Tim Blackwell, has been signed by the Chicago White Sox to manager their Single-A Winston-Salem Warthogs in the South Atlantic (Sally) League for the 2007 season. Blackwell was the pitching coach last season for San Diego and was responsible for attracting and developing a fine pitching staff that included league standouts such as Steve Smyth, Jake Meyer, and top reliever Josh Rummonds.
"Tim's incredible depth of knowledge and experience as a manager will be of tremendous benefit to the Chicago organization," said Kevin Outcalt, Commissioner of the Golden Baseball League. "We were fortunate to have him last year and wish him every success."
Blackwell was drafted as a catcher by the Boston Red Sox in the 13th round of the 1970 amateur draft. He made his big league debut behind the plate with the Red Sox in 1974, and went on to play 10 seasons in the major leagues with Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago Cubs, and Montreal. After his playing career he turned to managing and coaching and has managed 12 seasons in a number of independent and affiliated minor leagues.
Blackwell is the fourth 2006 GBL coach or manager to be signed by a major league organization this year, joining Yuma Scorpion's Manager Benny Castillo who was signed by the Detroit Tigers to manage their Gulf Coast League ballclub, Fullerton Flyer's pitching coach Charlie Hough who was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers to be the pitching coach of their Single-A California League team, and Yuma Scorpion's Rusty Meacham who was signed by the Washington Nationals to manage their Single-A New York-Penn League team in Vermont.
