San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
Nick Guerra, who has been with the Surf Dawgs since the beginning of the 2005 season, played all nine positions in the Surf Dawgs 7-5 victory over the Yuma Scorpions tonight at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Guerra started the game, throwing one inning allowing one hit and he also struck out one (the number four hitter in the Scorpions lineup).
The Scorpions broke out to a 4-0 lead after scoring three in the second and one in the third off of Brent Pourciau. Three of those runs came on a Javier Lopez home run; his second in two days, but the Surf Dawgs wouldn't go quietly.
In the bottom of the fourth San Diego was able to load the bases courtesy of a Scorpions error and some timely hitting. Victor Roldan strolled to the plate with the bases juiced and he put a charge into one over the left-center field wall for his first career grand slam. After four, the game was tied at four.
Yuma would bounce back in the sixth and score one more but once again the Dawgs retaliated. In the bottom half, Will Henderson singled to start things off. Joey Huskins followed suit and singled, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Super utility man Nick Guerra then singled in Henderson to tie it at five, and they weren't done yet. Roldan would come up and hit into a fielder's choice and Guerra was out at second. With runners at the corners once again, Jeremy McCann laid down a bunt in an attempt to squeeze home Huskins. Steve Dunham (4-7) fielded the ball cleanly and threw Huskins out at home for the second out.
With two away, Derrick Pyles pinch hit for Chris George and ripped a two-run double into the gap in left-center field to give San Diego the 7-5 lead. The lead would hold up as E.J. Shanks and Josh Rummonds shut the door on the Scorpions offense. Rummonds would pick up his 13th save of the season and George (2-7) picked up the win in relief.
San Diego (18-19) will venture to Long Beach for their final three games of the 2006 season. The first game is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. PT from Blair Field in Long Beach.
