Long Beach Armada News Release
LONG BEACH, CA July 2, 2006- Adam Pettyjohn's return to the Long Beach Armada was business as usual as the 10-game winner from last season pitched five shutout innings leading Long Beach (17-12) to a 9-1 thrashing of the Yuma Scorpions (13-17).
About coming back to Long Beach, Pettyjohn said, "It feels good. It's a great place to pitch. It's a pitcher's park."
Pettyjohn, who was 2-4 with one save and a 2.91 ERA for Double-A San Antonio this season, scattered just three hits and five strikeouts on just 60 pitches.
After a stretch of inactivity and only a small handful of bullpen sessions, Pettyjohn and the Armada coaching staff were keeping a close eye on the pitch count.
"It had been two and a half weeks since I've thrown," said Pettyjohn. "I was just trying to be smart about it."
Ryan Webb extended his hit streak to 17 games with a single in the third inning. The top of the Armada order, Webb, Adonis Harrison and Jeremy Hernandez each had two hits, as part of an 11-hit attack. Hernandez also reached base three times with walks. Long Beach broke open the game with a six-run third inning.
An error by second baseman Eric Pringle on a potential inning-ending fielder's choice from shortstop Hector Tena instead broke open the game for the Armada, turning a 1-0 game into a six-run inning.
The error allowed the second run of the inning to score before an RBI single by Jason Collette made it 3-0. David Ramirez then cleared the bases with a three-run double in the left-center gap to make it 6-0.
A two-run double by Harrison in the fifth was part of a three-run inning that made it 9-0.
"It was nice to get a win like this," said Armada Manager Darrell Evans. "It's a good atmosphere because everyone's contributing and everyone gets a chance to play."
Injuries and illnesses forced the Armada to shuffle the lineups again as Jason Collette, normally a catcher, covered left field while short stop and second baseman Bobby Castro filled in at third for a flu-recovering Randall Shelley.
Ryan Amason (1-1) in his second start of the season for Yuma gave up nine runs (three earned), on eight hits over four and two-third innings of work. He also walked six.
The home stand concludes on Monday with a fireworks show following the 6 p.m. game against Yuma.
