Super Sunday Shootout Win For The Jackals In Johnstown 3-2

Elmira Jackals News Release

JOHNSTOWN, PA - Pierre-Luc Faubert and Chaz Johnson notched shootout goals to lead the Elmira Jackals to a 3-2 win over Johnstown Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 1,503 at the Cambria County War Memorial. The win extended the Jackals points streak to four games (3-0-1-0) and moved Elmira to within one point of the North Division lead.

The Jackals had a 2-0 lead at the end of two periods, but Ryan Garlock pulled the Chiefs into a 2-2 tie by scoring his 16th and 17th goals of the year in the final period to force overtime. His second goal came with 4:54 left in regulation and was sparked by a pretty feed from former Jackals tough guy Mike Sgroi.

In stark contrast to Elmira's fast and furious start the previous night in a 5-2 win over Reading, the Jackals struck early in this game, but goals would be at a premium in the club's fifth meeting of the year against the Chiefs.

Trevor Hendrikx stuffed home his 5th of the season 2:33 into the game off of a Dan Kronick set-up from behind the net to produce the only goal of the opening period with Bobby Robins also picking up an assist.

Elmira then received a gift on a face-off in the Johnstown zone to extend their lead to 2-0 at 4:19 of the second period. Brett Pilkington won the draw back to the left point where Kyle Wharton sent a drive to the net. Ryan Nie (25 saves) had a clear look at the shot, but had it hit his stick, deflect up and settle behind him in the cage for Wharton's third goal of the year.

Garlock then salvaged an overtime point for the Chiefs with his two third period goals before Johnstown had a power play chance to win it when Robins was sent off for slashing 2:10 into sudden death play, the game's fifth and final penalty of the afternoon.

The Jackals penalty kill held firm and the game moved to the shootout where the Jackals, and more specifically goaltender Joel Martin (25 saves in regulation), have become specialists.

The first two shooters for each side came up empty with Frank Littlejohn and Benoit Doucet misfiring for Elmira while Rob Drummond and Sgroi were held off the board for the Chiefs.

Then the Jackals put the pedal to floor to pick up the bonus point.

Faubert zinged a shot under the blocker of Nie in the third round while Jean Desrochers was stopped by Martin. Johnson then followed up with a hard wrister that Nie got a piece of with the trapper, but couldn't keep it out of the net.

Martin then finished off a perfect 4-for-4 performance in the shootout by stopping Garlock to end the game and give Elmira its league-leading 7th shootout win.

For Faubert, it was his 4th shootout goal of the season, tying him for the league lead. It was his second shootout winner with his other coming November 18th in Texas (2-1).

Martin has now stopped 20 of 24 shootout attempts in posting his 23rd win overall and his 5th shootout victory, both ECHL bests.

The Jackals are off until returning to Johnstown Friday night for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff. Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on MAGIC FM (92.7/97.7).
