Chiefs bit by Jackals

February 3, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - The Chiefs rallied to overcome a two goal deficit in the third but suffered a 3-2 shootout loss at the hands of the Elmira Jackals.

Elmira would strike first on a Trevor Hendrikx wraparound from Bobby Robins and Dan Kronick at 2:03. Codey Burki was helped off the ice after taking a hit from Kyle Wharton along the boards. Johnstown failed to generate any offense on the power play, and the Jackals would take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room after one.

Johnstown tried to even the score on a 3-on-2 break with Rob Drummond, Ryan Garlock and Jason Spence early in the second, but the odd man rush was broken up just inside the Elmira zone. The Jackals would find the net again at 4:19 of the second period. Brett Pilkington fed Wharton off a faceoff to the right of Chiefs goaltender Ryan Nie, and the shot slid between Nie's legs and into the back of the goal. Elmira carried a two goal advantage after forty minutes of play.

Garlock would put the Chiefs on the board, going top shelf on Jackals netminder Joel Martin at 6:25 of the third period. Randy Rowe and Brian Deeth would add the helpers. Garlock evened the score at 15:06 with his second of the game. Justin Coutu started the play with a breakout pass from behind the Elmira net to Mike Sgroi, who fed Garlock in front of the crease.

Neither team would find the score sheet through the rest of regulation or overtime.

Pierre-Luc Faubert scored what turned out to be the game winner as he lifted the puck over a fallen Nie in the shootout. Chaz Johnson netted a shootout point for the Jackals as well, his shot ricocheting off Nie's left skate. Johnstown was unable to muster a point through four rounds of the shootout.

Ryan Nie took the loss in net for the Chiefs, making 25 saves on 27 shots.
