Zebulon, N.C. - The Jacksonville Suns (59-45, 19-15) scored three runs in three different innings and held off a late Carolina Mudcats (47-56, 17-17) rally for a 10-8 win in front of 6,287 Friday night at Five County Stadium.
Reliever Steve Cishek (2-1) picked up the winning decision after dealing two perfect relief innings with four strikeouts. A night after blowing a one-run lead in the ninth inning, Jose Ceda (1) saved the game with a one-hit ninth. Carolina starter Matt Klinker (5-5) fell in the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned, with six hits over four innings.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Lorenzo Scott doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Brandon Tripp fielder's choice, a play in which Scott jarred the ball free from catcher Devin Mesoraco on a collision for a 1-0 score. Mesoraco left the game with a mild concussion and was replaced by Chris Denove. Later in the inning Lee Mitchell hit a two-out, two-run home run for a 3-0 score.
Carolina answered in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four times against Suns starter Jose Rosario. An error, single and walk loaded the bases with no outs. After a foul out from Mike Costanzo a Luis Terrero sacrifice fly cut the Suns lead to 3-1. Denove next belted a three-run home run to left field for a 4-3 Mudcats lead.
The Suns tied the game in the second inning. Greg Burns led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild throw home on a Scott fielder's choice for a 4-4 game.
Jacksonville took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. With two out, Vinny Rottino knocked in Scott with a single to left field for a 5-4 lead. Lee Mitchell then hit a triple off the left field wall, driving in two runs for a 7-4 advantage.
The Suns added three more runs in the seventh inning. Matt Dominguez knocked in Rottino with a one-out single for an 8-4 lead. Later in the inning Scott singled home both Dominguez and Tim Torres for a 10-4 Suns lead.
Carolina started to climb back into the game with a three-run bottom of the seventh inning. Against reliever Wade Korpi, Luis Terrero walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Denove double for a 10-5 score. After Denove stole third base, a Sean Henry groundout knocked him in for a 10-6 score. Jose Castro then reached on an infield single, second on a walk, third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to cut the Suns lead to 10-7.
A Mike Costanzo solo home run in the eighth inning ended the scoring at 10-8.
