MOBILE, Ala. - Pounding out a dozen hits and scoring all of their runs with two outs, the first-place BayBears pulled away from the Montgomery Biscuits in a 5-2 victory on Friday night in front of 5,065 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Kyler Newby (2-2) and Alexander Torres (9-4) traded zeroes until the bottom of the fourth when Collin Cowgill and Konrad Schmidt started the inning with consecutive singles. Sean Coughlin grounded out to move both men up a base. After Taylor Harbin punched out, Ed Easley drilled a knock to left, scoring Cowgill and a sliding Schmidt with the game's first two runs.
Newby dealt through five scoreless innings in his longest outing of the season as he matched a season-high with seven strikeouts. His lead was spruced in the fifth when the BayBears (56-45, 20-13) tacked on a couple more thanks to two-out RBI singles by Cowgill and Coughlin.
Torres lasted six frames but surrendered nine hits while suffering a loss for the first time since June 5. Montgomery (55-47, 17-17) drew closer in the sixth with four straight singles against Roque Mercedes. Nevin Ashley's base hit brought home Leslie Anderson while Henry Wrigley touched the plate after a Rashad Eldridge's single.
Reid Mahon worked around a couple baserunners in the seventh to keep the BayBear lead intact. Bryan Shaw (S, 2) went the rest of the way as he recorded the final six outs while fanning one. The BayBears finished the scoring in the bottom of the eighth as Cyle Hankerd creeped up the BayBears' all-time RBI list with a base hit to score Harbin. Hankerd needs three more ribbies to be the record-holder.
Game four of this five-game set between the BayBears and Biscuits is on Saturday night at 7:05 on a Kids-Eat-Free Night. Kids 12 and under receive a free hot dog and Pepsi voucher with a box seat purchase plus the first 1,000 adults receive a free Cook's Pest Control T-shirt.
