Offensive Explosion Leads to 15-4 Barons Rout

The Barons put up a season-high 15 runs Friday night at Regions Park and cruised to a 15-4 victory against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

The Barons broke the game open in the second inning when Chattanooga starting pitcher Aaron Miller struggled to find the strike zone. Miller (1-4, 7.04) walked the first four batters of the inning and was pulled from the game without recording an out. He was charged with seven earned runs in the inning, including three on Tyler Kuhn's bases-clearing triple that went over the head of Lookouts center fielder Trayvon Robinson who failed to see the ball off the bat. Kuhn came around to score on a wild pitch by Miller, and Eduardo Escobar followed with a single before a walk to Jim Gallagher ended Miller's night.

James Adkins wasn't much better in relief, serving up the first of three Barons home runs on the night, this one a three-run shot to Salvador Sanchez that closed the books on Miller. Miller was charged with 8 earned runs during his one-plus innings on the hill. He gave up just four hits but issued five walks.

Kyle McCulloch (1-0, 4.00) wasn't sharp on the mound for the Barons, but he didn't need to be. The former first round pick gave up a pair of runs in each of the first two innings and put the Barons into an early 4-1 hole before the offense came to life. The Texas alum settled down after the second inning and allowed no more runs before his night ended after the fifth inning. He allowed ten base runners on the night, seven hits and three walks.

The first five batters in the Barons lineup each put up multiple hits, including Kuhn and Escobar who each had a season-high three hits on the night. Sanchez added a fourth RBI on an RBI single in the third inning to mark his second four-RBI game of the season.

John Shelby III clubbed his team-leading eighth home run of the season, a screamer down the left field line, to lead off the third inning. Escobar crushed his first long ball as a Baron, a mammoth two-run shot off Lookouts infielder Eddie Perez, in the eighth inning. Perez and Corey Smith, both infielders, each pitched after the Lookouts surrendered their designated hitter spot in the seventh inning.

The 15 runs were the most by a Barons squad since the team defeated the Tennessee Smokies 15-0 on August 8, 2009 at Regions Park. That game featured two pitchers who have since made their Major League debut; John Ely took the hill for the Barons that night opposite Andrew Cashner.

The eight runs scored in the second inning tied the most runs scored in an inning by the Barons this season. The Barons also put up eight runs against Jacksonville in the eighth inning on June 16 at Regions Park.

The same two teams will play again Saturday night at 6:30 PM. Charlie Leesman (1-1, 4.11) will try to give the Barons the series win when he goes for his second-straight victory of the season. Chris Withrow (3-6, 5.14) will get the ball for the Lookouts.
