JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â- The Suns broke a 1-1 tie with a six-run eighth inning to beat the Birmingham Barons, 7-1, on Saturday in front of 10,243 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
After Nick Alvarez's game-tying home run in the seventh, the Suns mounted a bigger rally in the eighth off reliever Clay Eason. Two errors allowed Brennan King and Jason Repko to reach and a fielder's choice by Dave Detienne loaded the bases. With one out, Mike Collins singled to left field, scoring Repko and Detienne and giving Jacksonville (12-11) a 3-1 lead.
Alvarez followed with an RBI single to left and Tarrik Brock offered the crushing blow, a three-run home run to right which landed out of the ballpark. When the smoke cleared, Lino Urdaneta retired the Barons in order in the ninth to secure the victory. Eason (0-3) was saddled with the loss.
Heath Totten (2-2) earned the victory by keeping the Barons' bats at bay. He allowed one unearned run â a single to center by Chad Durham misplayed by Reggie Abercrombie allowing Durham to score â over eight innings without walking a batter.
Barons starter Neal Cotts gave up only the home run to Alvarez in an otherwise stellar performance. He left in the seventh with the game tied 1-1 after throwing 125 pitches. Suns batters worked him deep in the count despite striking out 11 times against Cotts.
The Suns won their fourth consecutive game and snapped a five-game winning streak for the Barons (10-12).
Suns right-hander Edwin Jackson (0-1, 3.48 ERA) will start against Barons lefty Dennis Ulacia (0-3, 5.82) at 3:05 p.m. Sunday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
