Stars and Bears Supspended by Rain

April 26, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release

Mobile, AL – Huntsville and Mobile were suspended by rain with two outs and the bases empty in the top of seventh inning Friday night. The score is 0-0 with the Stars' Brandon Gemoll batting at a count of 1-2. The game will completed when Mobile (9-12) makes its first visit to Huntsville (12-9) May 31-June 3.

Stars third baseman Corey Hart made the play of the game before the rains came. With two down in the fifth, Mobile's Ben Johnson ripped a double into the rightfield corner. On the next pitch from Stars starter Derek Lee, Humberto Quintero hit a two-hop shot down the third-base line. Hart made a spectacular diving stab, leapt to his feet and gunned down Quintero at first to preserve the scoreless tie.

Lee made his third straight quality start, tossing six shutout frames, allowing just three hits and one walk while fanning six. Bears righty Brad Baker was just as good, permitting only one hit and three walks over six scoreless innings. Mobile advanced but two runners into scoring position, and Huntsville never pushed a runner past first.

"It was typical of games where I pitch well," Lee said. "I got ahead in the count, changed speeds and moved the ball in and out.

The Stars return home to begin a four-game series against Greenville Saturday night. Lefty Luis Martinez (2-1, 0.00) meets Braves righty Matt Belisle (1-2, 4.58) in the opener. Game time is 7:05 p.m. on Redstone CWF night at Joe Davis Stadium.
