Birmingham, ALA - A five-run sixth inning was enough to push the Birmingham Barons to an 8-5 win (in seven innings) over the struggling Orlando Rays in the first game of the doubleheader Friday.
Orlando rallied with five runs in their final at-bat in the seventh but couldn't push across the tying run as the Rays dropped their seventh straight game. Jose Veras (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits over 5.0 IP. The Rays were led offensively by Gabby Martinez and Chairon Isenia, who had two hits apiece. Amado German and Dan DeMent each chipped in two RBI for the Rays, who dropped to 7-14 on the season.
Barons 8, Rays 1 - Game Two
Birmingham, ALA - Birmingham grabbed an early lead and held on to drop the Rays 4-2 (in seven innings), sending Orlando to their eighth straight loss and sweeping the series from the O-Rays.
Dan Dement drove in two runs to lead the O-Rays offense. Jon Switzer (1-2) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Orlando travels to Tennessee to start a four game series with the Smokies before returning home for a four-game set with Birmingham, starting on Thursday.
