Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Three Suns pitchers combined to one-hit the Mobile BayBears in a 4-0 victory Wednesday afternoon in front of 4,256 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Suns starter Alfredo Gonzalez, pitching in his first game since April 5 because of a strained right pectoral muscle, allowed one hit and one walk through five innings. Gonzalez (1-0) earned the win, facing the minimum 15 batters.
The lone BayBears hit was Vince Faison's leadoff double in the third inning. He was tagged out in a rundown when he overran second base.
Reliever Steve Langone delivered three innings and retired the first eight he faced. With two outs in the eighth, Langone hit BayBears shortstop Khalil Greene in the back with a knuckleball. The Suns had faced the minimum 23 hitters to that point. Augustin Montero completed a scoreless ninth for Jacksonville (22-23).
Victor Diaz extended his hitting streak to nine games with a first-inning, run-scoring single to give the Suns a 1-0 lead. Mobile starter Roger Deago loaded the bases with nobody out, but did not allow another run. He gave up just one hit through the seventh, when Deago (3-2) allowed three runs and did not retire a batter.
Tony Socarras smacked a two-run single off Deago and later scored on a throwing error by reliever Mike Bumstead. Bumstead fielded Langone's sacrifice bunt and his throw to third base skipped away wildly, allowing Socarras to score the Suns' fourth run.
The victory is the Suns' fifth in their last six games. Jacksonville has pitched 25 consecutive scoreless innings against Mobile in this series. The BayBears are batting .125 (11-for-88) against the Suns in three games this season.
Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (5-1, 2.31 ERA) is scheduled to face Mobile righty Steve Watkins (2-3, 5.55) at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
