Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Hagerstown Suns, in conjunction with the Delmarva Shorebirds, are excited to announce the inception of the Governor's Cup for the 2018 season series. The trophy was unveiled in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday in Salisbury and will be awarded to the victor of the season series, which concludes on July 26 at Historic Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown.
"We're excited to add another element to the already exciting rivalry. Governor Hogan adding a new element with the Cup just makes everything more exciting." Suns General Manager Travis Painter said on Tuesday.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan was on hand for the unveiling on Sunday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium ahead of the Suns-Shorebirds afternoon matchup. Governor Hogan will also make the trip to Hagerstown on July 25, to visit Historic Municipal Stadium as the inaugural Governor's Cup series draws to a close.
"Every Suns/Shorebirds match up from now on will have additional meaning, there will be more at stake for the players and an additional level of interest for the fans. " Dan Spedden, President of the Hagerstown/Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau said in a statement, "I feel like this rivalry already exists at the minor league and major league level, I commend Governor Hogan for recognizing this and making it official".
The Suns and Shorebirds have 10 games left against each other in 2018, with six to be played in Salisbury while Hagerstown hosts the final four games of the season. The inaugural winner will be presented with the trophy at Historic Municipal Stadium with that series running from July 23 through the 26th .
"These two teams have matched up well in the past with some very good games mixed in over the last few years." Painter remarked. "It's only fitting that our two teams won't just be contending for a Northern Division title every year, but also the Governor's Cup trophy going forward."
The Suns return to Historic Municipal Stadium on Friday, June 15, to close out the first-half with a three- game series against the Columbia Fireflies. Seats are still available and fans can purchase their tickets or learn more about the Suns ticket plans and promotions for the 2018 season by calling 301-791-6266 or visiting www.hagerstownsuns.com.
