Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (7-7) got the bats hot early and overpowered the Lakewood BlueClaws (8-6) on Wednesday night, winning 12-7 to even the four-game series after two contests.
Using three stolen bases, a passed ball and a wild pitch in the top of the first off BlueClaws starter Brady Colvin (0-3) to get two RBI ground outs, the first by Francisco Soriano to short to score Jeff Kobernus and later one by Destin Hood to second to score Steven Souza from third for a 2-0 Suns lead.
In the beginning of the second, the Suns got runners on the corners with one out. Soriano hit a triple to right to score Sandy Leon and Kobernus. The next batter, Steven Souza hit a home run to left, his third of the season and scoring Soriano. After Colvin left the game after the home run, the Suns got another score off an RBI-single by J.P. Ramirez to score Justin Bloxom for a 7-0 lead after one-and-a-half innings.
Lakewood got the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Suns starter Jack McGeary threw two wild pitches, scoring Domingo Santana and Jiwan James and advanced Leandro Castro to third. After Anthony Hewitt struck out, McGeary committed a balk to score Castro. The BlueClaws cut the score to 7-3.
The Suns responded the next half inning with two more RBI ground outs. With runners on second and third with no outs, Hood grounded out to third to score Souza followed by Ramirez grounding out to first to score Bloxom for a 9-3 Suns lead.
The BlueClaws kept the bats going in the bottom of the fourth with three singles in a row plus a walk, including an RBI single to left by Adam Buschini to score Jeremy Barnes. With the bases loaded and no one out, Paul Applebee (1-0) came in to replace McGeary. Applebee's first batter, Jonathan Villar, walked to score Darin Ruf and keep the bases loaded. After a sacrifice fly by James to center to score Buschini and get runners on the corners, Lakewood did not score again in the inning after Villar got caught stealing second and Castro flew out to center. The Suns kept the lead 9-6.
The scoring continued into the top half of the fifth. Hagerstown got runners on the corners with one out. As Soriano stole second, a throwing error by pitcher Siulman Lebron score Eury Perez from third and advanced Soriano to third. Souza brought Soriano home on a single to center to put the score at 11-6 in favor of the Suns.
Each side scored one more run, Lakewood off a Ruf RBI double to score Hewitt in the fifth and Hagerstown off a bases loaded walk by Ramirez to score Souza in the 8th, and the Suns took the win 12-7.
Both sides scored a combined 19 runs, which ties a season record. Hagerstown and Lakewood scored 19 on April 14th in a 10-9 win for the BlueClaws.
McGeary got a no decision after leaving with the lead in the fourth. He pitched three innings and was charged with six runs. Applebee picked up the win in relief, pitching four innings with one unearned run and five strikeouts. Kyle Morrison pitched two innings of shutout relief to end the game.
