Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hickory Crawdads (9-13) used a career best pitching performance from Duke Welker to take down the Hagerstown Suns (10-12) on Friday night. Welker (2-6) went seven innings, struck out seven and gave up only one run. The seven innings of work is the deepest Welker has pitched into a game as a professional.

Suns' starter Colton Willems (5-5) took the loss as he worked six innings and gave up four runs, but only two of them were earned.

All four Crawdad runs came in the sixth inning. Left fielder Albert Laboy started the inning off with a single. After a groundout by Jordy Mercer, third baseman Matt Hague singled on a line drive to left field. First baseman Tom Hagan followed that with a single of his own to drive in Laboy. Designated hitter Erik Huber then singled on a line drive to Mark Gildea. The Suns centerfielder misplayed the ball and two runs came around to score, as Huber advanced to third. With only one out, Andrew Walker hit a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Huber.

The first Suns' run came in the bottom of the seventh inning. First baseman Tim Pahuta led the inning off with a single. Third baseman Stephen King followed that up with a single. Welker got Michael Burgess to go down on strikes, but was unable to get Sean Rooney. The Suns catcher singled back up the middle to score King.

Hagerstown's rally in the ninth inning came up short, as they were only able to bring in one run in the final frame. King singled with one out and moved to third on a Burgess double to left field. Rooney picked up his second RBI of the game on a ground out to third base that scored King.

Hickory reliever Michael Felix worked the final two innings to pick up his second save on the season.

The Suns and Crawdads will play game two of their four game series tomorrow at 7:05 from Municipal Stadium.
