ZEBULON, N.C. â For the third consecutive game, the Suns lost in the late innings by a single run in a 2-1 loss to the Carolina Mudcats in front of 2,258 fans Monday at Five County Stadium.
Josh Wilson's sacrifice fly to right off Suns reliever Lino Urdaneta in the eighth inning scored Drew Niles and gave the Mudcats their first lead of the night. Niles hit a one-out, pinch-hit single and was moved to third by Jesus Medrano's double. Urdaneta (0-7) earned the loss.
The Suns (49-57 overall, 18-19 second half) lost their fourth consecutive game. Jacksonville opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning when pitcher Tommy Farmer singled home Nick Theodorou with two outs. Farmer earned a no-decision despite allowing one run and four hits over six innings. Josh Willingham homered off Farmer in the fourth inning, tying the score at 1-1.
Mudcats reliever Franklyn Gracesqui (1-3) earned the victory in relief after stranding two Suns in scoring position with one out in the seventh inning. He also pitched a scoreless eighth, striking out the side. Mike Flannery pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 16th save.
With the victory, the Mudcats (61-42, 19-16) moved to within three games of first place Tennessee, which was rained out at Orlando.
The Suns have lost nine of their last 12 games and have been involved in 11 consecutive games decided by two runs or fewer.
Right-hander Heath Totten (8-9, 3.71 ERA) is scheduled to face Mudcats righty Nic Ungs (0-3, 8.36) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Five County Stadium.
