Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears were no-hit through the first seven innings by Birmingham starter Neal Cotts Monday night, but after getting their first hit, they battled back against the Barons bullpen to win the game, 4-2. All four BayBears runs came in the bottom of the eighth, as Mobile finally gave the 2,511 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium something to cheer about.
BayBears second baseman Jake Gautreau hammered a single off the right field wall to break up the no-no leading off the eighth. Following a fly out, Cotts (8-6) walked the next two hitters to load the bases. Jeff Bajenaru came in to relieve Cotts, but faced only one batter. The first pitch he threw to Todd Donovan went back to the screen, allowing Gautreau to score from third. Donovan eventually worked a walk to re-load the bases and that was it for Bajenaru.
Ryan Meaux was next out of the pen for Birmingham and with his first pitch he hit pinch hitter Humberto Quintero with a breaking ball, scoring Vince Faison to tie the game. Jon Knott then hit a line drive single into left center scoring Freddy Guzman and Donovan, to put the BayBears ahead to stay 4-2.
BayBears starter Justin Germano nearly matched Cotts pitch-for-pitch. Germano did not allow a run until the top of the seventh inning as Guillermo Reyes doubled home Jon Hamilton with two outs. Germano threw seven innings, giving up just five hits and one run while striking out three. The right-hander was not around for the decision, however.
Reliever Bryan Gaal (2-5) picked up the win throwing the top of the eighth, giving up a solo homerun to Jeremy Reed. BayBears closer Rusty Tucker bounced back after blowing the save Sunday night against the Barons, as he earned his 26th save of the season, tying for the league lead.
The BayBears and Barons conclude their four-game home-and-home series Tuesday night at 7:05. Cory Stewart (10-5; 2.88) will get the start on the hill for Mobile against Birmingham's Enemencio Pacheco (8-2; 2.66).
