
BayBears aquire new pitcher

Mobile, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears Professional Baseball Club announced today that pitcher R.D. Spiehs has been added to the roster after being acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants.
Spiehs had been pitching at Norwich, the Giants Double-A affiliate in the Eastern League. Spiehs had appeared in 39 games, all as a reliever, and had posted a 2-5 record with seven saves and a 3.28 ERA. Since May 11th, Spiehs has pitched in 26 games, posting a 1.11 ERA, allowing just five earned runs in 40 innings. From May 11 to July 4, he allowed only one earned run over 30 and two-thirds innings.
Spiehs was acquired from San Francisco as the player to be named later in a deal that sent pitcher Matt Herges from San Diego to San Francisco in exchange for minor league pitcher Clay Hensley and a Player To Be Named Later.
Spiehs was a 33rd round draft pick by the Giants in 2001 out of the University of Nebraska. He is 23 years old.
