Huntsville, Ala. - Chris Hatcher hit a go-ahead homerun in the seventh inning while six pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout, including Matt Peterson's 36th save to tie the Southern League single season record, as the Jacksonville Suns (80-58, 45-23) took a 2-0 victory over the Huntsville Stars (63-73, 25-42) in front of 833 Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium.
Suns reliever Levale Speigner (3-1) picked up the victory, dealing one scoreless inning. Stars reliever Mike McClendon (4-3) fell in the loss after a two inning appearance while allowing the seventh inning homerun. Matt Peterson (36) saved the game with a perfect ninth inning, tying the Southern League single-season record for saves. Only two other pitchers, Edwin Almonte of Birmingham in 2001 and Joe Valentine of Birmingham in 2002 have saved 36 games in a single season in League history.
Jacksonville failed to score with one-out, bases loaded opportunities in the first and fourth innings against Huntsville starter Josh Butler. The Suns opened the scoring in the seventh inning as Chris Hatcher belted his eighth homerun of the season for a 1-0 le ad.
The Suns added another run in the eighth inning on a Chris de la Cruz sacrifice fly to score Ryan Klosterman for a 2-0 score.
