Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Logan Parker singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth giving Carolina its sixth straight victory, beating Mississippi for the third game in a row 3-2 before 4,985 fans at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
Parker looped a broken-bat hit into right-centerfield to culminate a three-run rally for the Mudcats (27-41), who entered the eighth inning trailing 2-0.
The Braves (33-33) assumed a 2-0 lead in the fifth against Carolina starter Alexander Smit on a run-scoring double by Concepcion Rodriguez and a follow-up single by Brandon Hicks to give the Braves the advantage.
Meanwhile, Mississippi starter Jose Ortegano carried a shutout into the eighth before a single to center by Carson Kainer began building the tying inning. A wild pitch and walk followed, before a one-out RBI-single by Kris Negron to bring home the first run. Ortegano was lifted for Tommy Palica, who retired Jose Castro on a grounder. However, Shaun Cumberland dribbled a check-swing roller directly up the third base line which bumped the bag for a hit to score the tying run.
In the ninth, Zack Cozart started the clinching inning on a single to left-center, which took a bad hop behind Rodriguez in centerfield, allowing Cozart to take second. Eric Eymann grounded a single to left, moving Cozart to third. After a strikeout and walk, Parker singled to make a winner of reliever Zach Ward.
The series continues Sunday at 6:15 PM ET with Jerry Gil on the mound for the Mudcats.
