Knoxville Smokies News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - Andrew Cashner turned in one of his most dominant outings of the season to lead the Tennessee Smokies (37-31) past the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (35-33) 3-1 on Saturday night at Pringles Park.
The win guarantees the Smokies at least a share of the North Division, and Tennessee can clinch the division with a victory in either Sunday or Monday's games in Jackson.
Cashner pitched seven scoreless innings, and was perfect into the fifth inning as he only allowed two hits in the game.
The Smokies gave the 2008 19th overall draft pick a lead to work with in the fourth inning, as an error on West Tenn second baseman Carlos Truinfel allowed Blake Lalli to score to make it a 1-0.
Tennessee held on with the one run lead until the Smokies scored two runs in the eighth, with Marquez Smith hitting an RBI single, and a throwing error allowed one more Tennessee run to score.
Matt Mangini led off the bottom of the eighth for West Tenn with a solo home run off of Smokies reliever Marcos Mateo to put the score at 3-1, but that was the last offensive highlight of the night for the Diamond Jaxx.
Brian Schlitter pitched a scoreless ninth for Tennessee to end the game and record his 22 save of the season.
The Smokies will send Hung-Wen Chen (7-11) to the mound for the fourth game of the series. Chen will be opposed by West Tenn's Steve Bray (7-7, 2.88).
