Barons Set All-Time Mark For Winning Percentage

September 5, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

HOOVER, AL - The Birmingham Barons have been playing baseball since 1885, but no regular season has been as successful as the 2009 season.

Saturday night's 5-4 win in Chattanooga guaranteed the Barons the best winning percentage in franchise history. The 1906 Barons held the mark with a .651 winning percentage (86-46). With the win, the Barons are guaranteed at least a .655 winning percentage in 2009.

The win also moved the Barons into a tie for the most wins in modern franchise history (since 1964). The 91 wins ties the mark held by the 1983 squad that went 91-54.

The Barons set the all-time winning percentage mark with a roster that contained a plethora of top prospects. The Barons opened the season with six of the top-10 prospects in the Chicago White Sox farm system. Gordon Beckham, Dayan Viciedo, Aaron Poreda, Tyler Flowers, Brandon Allen and John Shelby III didn't disappoint, as the nucleus guided the Barons to a 48-21 mark in the first-half.

Beckham and Poreda moved on to the big leagues by the time the second half rolled around while Flowers and Allen were shipped to Charlotte, but the Barons didn't skip a beat. David Cook, Jordan Danks, John Ely, Danny Hudson and CJ Retherford joined Viciedo and Shelby III for a second-half run that has the Barons at 43-25 with two games remaining before the team's Divisional Playoff showdown with the Jacksonville Suns.

The Barons will open the Southern League playoffs at Regions Park on Thursday, September 10 against the Jacksonville Suns. The 7:05 PM game will include a Thirsty Thursday promotion. The playoffs will continue at Regions Park on Friday, September 11 with game two. Another 7:05 PM start time; the game will feature post-game fireworks.

Tickets for both games can be purchased online at the Barons website, over the phone or in person at the Regions Park Box Office.
