Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (10-6, 54-32) celebrated America's birthday on Friday in style with a 9-0 shutout win over the Kannapolis Intimidators (11-5, 40-43). It is the sixth shutout win for the Suns this season.
Hagerstown first got on the board in the bottom of the second. First baseman Carlos Lopez led off the frame with a single to left. A missed catch error by Kannapolis 1B Tyler Williams on a pickoff attempt allowed Lopez to advance from first to third. Catcher Austin Chubb brought Lopez home from third with a fly ball double to left, making it 1-0. Chubb scored the second run of the frame on an RBI single from 3B Cody Dent.
The Suns opened the game up with a five-run fourth. Designated hitter Drew Ward led off the inning with a solo blast over the right field wall, his team-leading ninth homer of the season. That was followed by a single by Chubb, and two batters later Dent singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Then came back-to-back doubles by RF Narciso Mesa and CF Rafael Bautista Bautista, which made it 6-0 Hagerstown. Bautista scored the final run of the frame on an RBI single by Lopez.
The final Hagerstown runs crossed the plate in the seventh. Back-to-back walks followed by a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out. Bautista then grounded into a force out at second, which pushed one run across the plate and made it 8-0 Suns. A fielding error allowed the final run to cross the plate. In total Kannapolis committed five errors in the game.
Starting LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-0) picked up the win for the Suns. He threw six innings, surrendering three hits and four walks while striking out nine. Starting LHP Jeff McKenzie (1-1) suffered the loss for the Intimidators. He pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
These two teams continue their three-game series at Municipal Stadium on Saturday July 5. The Suns will send LHP Hector Silvestre (3-6) to the mound for his 15th start and appearance of the year. He will square off against RHP James Dykstra (6-6) for the Intimidators. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
