Arizona Sundogs News Release
The Arizona Sundogs (1-1-0) opened the 2010-11 season with a pair of contests against the Colorado Eagles last weekend.
On Friday, Arizona won its season opening game for the first time since its 2007-08 championship season, topping the host Eagles by a 5-3 mark on the strength of a four-point night (1g/3a) by rookie forward Jason Williams. Joey Sides, Steve Kaye and Chase Watson all collected a goal and an assist in the win.
The Sundogs dropped the second of a two-game set against Colorado on Saturday, falling 5-3 after the Eagles tallied four goals in the second period.
Arizona opens its home portion of the 2010-11 regular season on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:05pm (Arizona time) against the Fort Wayne Komets. Sundogs Storylines:
- Rookie forward Jason Williams leads all first-year players and ranks tied-for-second overall in scoring with five points (2g/3a) in two games. In his professional debut, the Plattsburgh, New York, native collected one goal and three assists to lead the Sundogs to a 5-3 win, its first season opening win in three years. His two goals rank second among CHL rookies and his three assists are tops among first-year players. Williams' plus-4 rating in Friday's 5-3 win ranks tied for the highest plus/minus rating in a single game this season. He is currently riding a two-game point streak.
- Arizona's penalty kill ranks eighth out of 18 teams at 86.7%, allowing two goals on 15 opponent power play chances. The Sundogs power play also ranks eighth in the CHL, having converted once on seven man-advantage opportunities.
- Five of the Sundogs' eight goals this season have come in the third period, tied for most in the league with Bossier-Shreveport. Conversely, Arizona has allowed a league-high six second period goals.
- In Friday's win, Arizona committed a league-high nine minor penalties. Bossier-Shreveport, Mississippi (twice) and Texas also have committed nine minors in a single game this season.
- Rookie netminder Bobby Jarosz turned aside 28 of 31 shots in Friday's 5-3 win, improving to 2-0 in his professional career before Saturday's 5-3 setback.
- Jason Visser is riding a two-game point streak, collecting three assists in two games. The fourth-year Sundog ranks second on the team in scoring, collecting a pair of helpers in Friday's win and another assist in Saturday's loss.
- Mark Kolanos has collected points in two straight contests, including a goal in Friday's win and an assist in Saturday's loss.
- Arizona finished a collective plus-19 in Friday's 5-3 win over Colorado with not a single player finishing with a minus rating.
- The Sundogs are 1-0-0 when being outshot by their opponent and winless (0-1-0) when outshooting the opposing team. Arizona was outshot 31-23 in Friday's win and outshot the Eagles 35-28 in Saturday's 5-3 loss.
- Arizona picked up its third regular season win at the Budweiser Events Center in 14 meetings in Friday's 5-3 victory. Dating back to last season, the Sundogs have won two of their last three at the Eagles' home arena
- Joey Sides collected the team's first shorthanded goal of the season in Friday's win. The second-year forward added an assist in the win and is averaging a point per game with two points (1g/1a) in as many contests.
- Veteran defenseman Tyler Butler will wear the 'C' this season after Chris Bartolone retired. Jason Visser and Joel Irving will each wear an 'A', serving as alternate captains.
