(P)at it Again
Patrick Levesque scored what was the Mallards' first goal of the season and first ever Central Hockey League goal just nine seconds into last Saturday night's opener against Odessa. Levesque also scored the Mallards' first International Hockey League goal on opening night last season. Levesque found the net at 3:58 of the second period to open the scoring in the Mallards' 3-1 road win over the Flint Generals October 17, 2009.
Special Teams
The Mallards came up short in the specials teams battle with the Jackalopes last Saturday. The Mallards went 0-for-8 on the power play and surrendered a power play goal and a shorthanded goal. The Mallards went 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Firsts Zac Pearson and Eric Giosa notched their first points as Mallards by assisting on Levesque's goal last Saturday.
Between the Pipes David Brown replaced Michel Robinson in the Mallard net at the start of the third period last Saturday night. Robinson made 17 saves on 21 shots over two periods and took the loss. Brown made five saves in relief. Including the Mallards' two preseason games against Bloomington, Brown and Robinson have now split time in three straight games.
Rooks
The Mallards' Phil Axtell, Mark Ehl and Bobby Preece all made their professional debuts last Saturday night. While none of the three recorded a point, Axtell was called for the Mallards' first penalty of the season when he was assessed a double minor for high sticking at 4:02 of the first period.
Turn the Page
After opening against a foe from the Berry Conference, the Mallards will play their next eight games against opposition from within the Turner Conference. The Flock does not take on another opponent from the Berry Conference until hosting the Arizona Sundogs on Saturday, November 13.
Three-in-Three
The Mallards this weekend face their first three-game-in three-night stretch of the season. In all, the Mallards will play three times in three evenings a dozen times this year.
Familiar Face
Former Mallard right wing Chris Lipsett will be on the opposite side of the ice when the Mallards face Dayton Friday. Lipsett, who last season tied for the Mallards' team lead in assists (37) and ranked second on the club in goals (28) and points (65), has picked up assists in each of the Gems' first two games- a 3-1 win over Evansville last Saturday and a 7-5 loss to Rapid City the next afternoon.
The IceMen Cometh The Evansville franchise was transferred from Muskegon in the offseason after the Lumberjacks last season finished first overall in the IHL. Coach Rich Kromm made the move form Michigan to Indiana to rejoin a number of his former 'Jack charges, including Brian Bicek (who scored Evansville's only goal in the IceMen's season opening loss last Saturday against Dayton), Mark Cody, John DiPace, Mario Larocque, Jordan Little, Matt Lundin, Nick Schneider and Damian Surma. Evansville defenseman Jay Holladay played five games for the Mallards early last season.
