Bossier-Shreveport's Brett Smith Named Oakley CHL Player of the Week

TEMPE, AZ (October 18, 2010) -The Central Hockey League announced today that Bossier-Shreveport forward Brett Smith has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending October 17, 2010.

The Guelph, Ontario native emerged from the CHL's opening weekend as the league's leading scorer but more importantly helped his team to back-to-back wins over the Mississippi RiverKings giving his team a three-way tie for first place in the Berry Conference. Smith finished the week with four goals and four assists and is tied for the league lead with a +5 plus/minus rating.
In the Mudbugs opening night 10-1 victory over Mississippi, Smith scored three times, including two shorthanded goals and one power play goal, and had four assists giving him a team-record seven points, the most points in a CHL game in nearly two years (Chris Richards, seven points for Corpus Christi on Oct. 18. 2008). Smith's lone point in the following night's 2-1 victory in Mississippi would come late in the second period when his fourth score of the season tied the game at one.
Playing in his sixth CHL season, all with the Mudbugs, Smith has averaged just over 50 points a season with his best campaign coming in the 2005-06 season when he totaled 63 points (30-33=63). Last year, the 5-8, 180-pound center finished with 45 points (14-31=45) in 62 games.
