Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (June 23, 2010) - The Connecticut Sun will celebrate The Arc of New London County and its commitment to special needs families during Kids Day on July 17th at Mohegan Sun Arena.
During the game, fans are encouraged to visit The Arc of New London County's table on the main concourse, meet other Arc families and learn how to support the organization, which is one of an extensive network of Arc chapters throughout Connecticut and the United States.
Approximately 500 supporters of The Arc of New London County and Arcs statewide will be in the arena to cheer on the Sun as they face the Atlanta Dream in a key Eastern Conference game. Fans are encouraged to purchase game tickets, which will raise additional funds for Arc programming, particularly Waterford's Camp Harkness, which hosts campers with intellectual and related disabilities from around Connecticut each year.
"We so value this partnership,"Â said The Arc of New London County's Executive Director, Kathleen Stauffer. "To bring the concerns of people with intellectual and related disabilities into the public arena benefits everybody. The Sun's players, sponsors and staff really do embrace the notion that every person deserves full inclusion in our community. In doing that, the team sets a valuable and powerful example for us all."
The Connecticut Sun announced it would be partnering with The Arc of New London County shortly before the start of this season. Sun players participated in the Arc's Third Annual Pirate Party fundraiser on April 24th at the Mystic Arts Center, and will actively participate in The Arc of New
London's summer program at Camp Harkness, offering basketball camps to individuals with disabilities. An Arc of New London County transportation van will also be wrapped in Sun colors this season.
The Arc of New London County was established in 1952 by parents of children with intellectual disabilities to serve the citizens of New London County. Its mission is to provide individualized support, services, and advocacy to persons with intellectual and other related developmental disabilities, and to help facilitate their full participation and inclusion in the communities of Southeastern Connecticut.
Arc Night begins at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena on July 17th . To purchase tickets and to support Summer Camp programs at Harkness, please visit www.thearcnlc.org . Ticketholders purchasing through The Arc of New London County's Web site and The Arc General Store and Bakery at 52 Sacred Heart Drive in Groton will be eligible to participate in a meet-and-greet with Sun players as well as a group picture. Limited tickets are available.
The Connecticut Sun is in the midst of its eighth season at Mohegan Sun Arena. Season tickets and mini-plans are on sale, and can be reserved by calling The Connecticut Sun Sales Department at 1.877.SUN.TIXX (786-8499) or by visiting www.connecticutsun.com.
