
Sun finish preseason with loss

SAN ANTONIO - The Connecticut Sun closed out the 2007 preseason with a 86-53 loss to the San Antonio Silver Stars at the SBC Center on Tuesday night.
The Sun finished the exhibition season 1-2.
San Antonio broke the game open with a 12-2 run late in the first half, benefiting from six Connecticut turnovers while moving out to a 37-27 lead.
The Sun, who committed a whopping 31 turnovers, were still within six points early in the third quarter. But San Antonio outscored the Sun 20-4 over the next five minutes to build a 57-35 lead, and the game was essentially over.
Lindsay Whalen led the Sun with 14 points and center Erika de Souza added 10 points. But the rest of the starting five - Nykesha Sales, Katie Douglas and Asjha Jones - combined for 11 points in limited minutes.
Erin Buescher came off the bench to lead San Antonio with 16 points while point guard Becky Hammon, recently traded from New York, added 10 points and three assists. San Antonio had 20 more field goal attempts than the Sun (71-51), and also had a 17-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Whalen had a team-high 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field during the first half, but Connecticut was undone by 15 turnovers. Twelve of those 15 turnovers were committed by the Sun starting five.
Connecticut opens the regular season May 19th in Washington and returns to San Antonio for a rematch with the Silver Stars on May 23rd. The Sun meet Los Angeles in their home opener on May 26th at 3:30 p.m.
