(Amarillo, TX) -- Matt Summers' power play goal mid-way through the third period supported the goaltending of Tyler Sims, as the Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Gorillas, 2-1 in Amarillo on Saturday night.
Dallas Steward opened the scoring for the RiverKings with a power play goal at 5:43 of the first period, assisted by Joe Markusen and Matt Pierce. The goal was Steward's second red-lighter since coming to the RiverKings from the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL. The counter was also his first power play goal.
Amarillo tied it with a goal from Joe Guenther at 14:24 for a 1-1 tie after twenty minutes.
There would also be no further scoring in the entire second period, as the score remained deadlocked after forty minutes of action.
But, the power play came through again for the RiverKings mid-way through the third period, on a two-man advantage. Summers converted a pass from Louis Dumont and scored close in at 10:39 for the eventual game-winning goal. Derek Landmesser also earned an assist on Summers' fourth goal of the year and his third power play tally.
With both Mississippi goals coming with the man advantage, the RiverKings were 2-for-9 for the night, while Amarillo was scoreless in four chances.
Mississippi out shot the Gorillas 43-26 with winning goaltender Tyler Sims (3-3-0) stopping 25 shots. Losing goalie Mike Gorman (6-8-0) made 41 saves.
