Columbus Catfish News Release

Columbus, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs' starting pitcher Christian Garcia pitched 8 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out five en route to a 3-1 victory over the Catfish at Golden Park on Wednesday night. Two of the three runs scored by the RiverDogs were on wild pitches by Catfish pitching. 2B Travis Denker led the Catfish offense with two hits, including a triple, and a run scored.

In the top of the third inning, Charleston second baseman Ryan Haag led off with a double to the right-centerfield gap and advanced to third base on a Marcos Vechionacci ground out to second base. Later in the inning he scored the second and decisive Charleston run of the night when RHP Brandon Weeden uncorked a wild pitch. In the top of the eighth inning, after loading the bases with no one out reliever Zach Hammes induced a come backer from Ben Jones to start a 1-2-3 double play. The very next pitch Hammes threw wildly to the back stop to allow Vechionacci to score.

Weeden was the tough luck loser after pitching six strong innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out six. Charleston closer Mike Martinez pitched the ninth inning for his league leading eleventh save and his third against the Catfish this year.

The Catfish wrap up this series against the RiverDogs tomorrow night at Golden Park starting at 6:00pm. Tomorrow is also Montgomery Gentry Night at the ballpark. Any fan wearing Montgomery Gentry apparel, bringing a CD or singing a song, will be admitted for two dollars. It is also Thirsty Thursday where all beer and soda is just one dollar.
