Lancaster, Pennsylvania - A massive debut from Jimmy Paredes helped carry the Somerset Patriots (34-22) to a 14-3 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers (19-36) Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Patriots opened the scoring with a four-run third inning. Yvonne Gonzalez broke the ice with an RBI single before Paredes (1) lifted a two-out, three-run home run over the wall in left field.
Edwin Espinal raced home from third base on a passed ball in the fourth inning before a Will Kengor sacrifice fly and a Rey Navarro two-out RBI single increased the Patriot lead to 7-0.
Somerset added three more runs in the sixth on a Ramon Flores sacrifice fly and a two-out, two-run single from Paredes. The former big leaguer finished his night 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI.
Meanwhile, Brett Oberholtzer (W, 5-1) kept the Barnstormers both off the board and without a hit over his first five innings. He would ultimately go seven strong, allowing three runs on four hits and seven strikeouts.
Lancaster got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a Parker Morin two-run home run. Somerset responded with a Michael Crouse RBI fielder's choice in the 7th, before the Barnstormers answered again on K.C. Hobson's RBI infield single.
The Patriots got the lead-off batter on-base in six-straight innings, including the first two batters of an inning reaching base five-straight times from the third through the seventh.
Somerset topped off the scoring with three more runs in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to Alfredo Rodriguez, Gonzalez's second RBI single of the night and Flores' second sacrifice fly of the evening.
Jared Lakind (L, 2-2) allowed seven runs (six earned) over four and one-third innings to take the loss.
The Patriots and Barnstormers continue their four-game series with a day-night doubleheader Wednesday. Southpaw Logan Darnell (1-0, 4.22) makes the game one start for Somerset against Barnstormer right-hander Garrett Granitz (0-0, 5.48 ERA). Lefty Thomas Dorminy (2-4, 2.98 ERA) takes the mound for the Patriots in game two against Lancaster southpaw Buddy Baumann (2-6, 4.20 ERA). First pitch for game one is set for 11:00 a.m., with game two beginning at 7:00 p.m.
