Strong New Jersey Pitching Holds off Ottawa Comeback

Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Despite a late comeback, the New Jersey Jackals held off the Ottawa Champions with a major league pedigree behind them in game two of the three-game series from RCGT Park.

They took a 5-4 win over Ottawa, holding the Champions rally short by one.

They were led by former major leaguer RHP Mat Latos, who allowed just one hit over four innings of work. He was taken out after four innings due to a pitch count, but left the Champions guessing in his abbreviated start. Ottawa had two hits through the game's first six innings, before breaking through with a comeback attempt in the later stages.

"Their pitchers did a pretty good job on us from the first inning on," said Champions manager Hal Lanier after the game was completed. "It's tough winning games when you only get two hits in the first part of the game."

Lanier also gave his team credit for coming back in the later part of the game. INF Jordan Caillouet had the team's lone run via a solo shot, and the score was 5-1 New Jersey until the ninth inning. But in that last frame, the Champions strung back-to-back base hits together to drive in three runs and cut the New Jersey lead to one.

However, RHP Vin Mazzaro was able to bear down and struck out Champions INF Vinny Guglietti to end the game.

Ottawa wraps up their series with the Jackals Thursday, before the first-place Sussex County Miners come to the ballpark for the final time this year on the weekend. Tickets for all Champions home games are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
