Strong Island Sound News Release

Newark, NJ: The Strong Island Sound, always ready for a challenge filled in at the last minute for the now defunct Baltimore Pearls and traveled down I-95 to play the Newark Express at Essex County Community College. With players arriving literally minutes before tip-off this could have proven to be a disastrous game against an energetic, if undersized Express squad.

The game was close throughout with early baskets traded by Zakee Boyd of Newark and Greg Plummer of Strong Island. In atypical fashion the Sound played their best defense of the season in the second half. In the first three games of the season Strong Island had blown double digit leads in the third quarter but last night they fought hard.

Newark was resilient and behind baskets from James "Speedy" Williams and Daquan Everett, had a 98-96 lead with less than 10 seconds to go. That's when the Sound clamped down even tighter on defense and caused a turnover in the backcourt forcing the 3D rule to go into effect. Sean Dantzler then drove to the lane for a lay-up but was fouled sending him to the line with under 3 seconds to play. He calmly hit all three attempts and Newark missed a last second half court heave, sealing the win for the Sound.

Strong Island improves to 2-2 with the win and will get ready to welcome in the Cape Cod Frenzy on Saturday night.
