Sound prepare to host Cape Cod after evening record at Newark

November 16, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release

Patchogue, N.Y.-The Strong Island Sound will face the Cape Cod Frenzy on Saturday night at Suffolk Community College with one more win than they expected to have at that time. Being tabbed by the ABA as the replacement team to travel to Newark to face the Express following the early demise of the now defunct Baltimore Pearls, the Sound were able to escape with a 99-98 victory. Strong Island's season record now stands at 2-2.

The Sound trailed 98-96 with only 10 seconds left in the game, and the Express had possession of the ball. Forcing a turnover in the back-court, the Sound now took over with the 3-D light on. On the ensuing play, Sean Dantzler was fouled and went to the line for three attempts. With ice water in his veins, he sank the trey of free throws to give the Sound a one-point advantage. A desperation half-court heave by the Express went for naught and the Strong Island players celebrated at the buzzer.

The Cape Cod Frenzy are currently 2-0 and have been an improved squad from the 2005-06 Boston Frenzy version. They opened their season north of the border and were able to come away with two close victories. Their first stop was in Montreal to face the Matrix, and Cape Cod found themselves down by 10 points in the second quarter. They were able to close the gap a bit and went into halftime trailing Montreal 49-44.

The Matrix were able to extend their lead to 13 points at the 7:26 mark of the third quarter. But the Frenzy came back once again and the game was tied at 75 after three quarters. The final quarter proved to be just as unpredictable as the previous, with the Frenzy going up by six, only to see their lead disappear and the Matrix to take a 10-point lead again with five minutes remaining. The Frenzy clawed their way back and the game was all even at 108 with 5.4 seconds left. Rob Sanders (27 points) was able to put back a missed shot by Dustin Hellenga (24 points) as time expired for the 110-108 win.

Next up for the Frenzy was the expansion Quebec City Kebecwa, and Cape Cod seemed to be in control of the game, leading by nine with eight minutes left. But this is the ABA, and leads can go away quickly. Quebec used a full-court press and some timely 'threes' to take a 97-91 lead with 2:24 left. Back-to-back shots from downtown by Hellenga (14 points) got the Frenzy close and they eventually were able to take a slim 101-99 lead. Poor free-throw shooting almost came back to haunt the Frenzy, but they did just enough to get out of Canada with their heads held high.

Tickets for the game on Saturday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. against the Cape Cod Frenzy can be purchased online at www.strongislandsound.com or at the box office the night of the game at Suffolk Community College in Selden.
