Strong Island Sound crack ABA Top 16

January 26, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release

The Strong Island Sound have been made the list! The January 24th, 2006 release of the ABA Pit Bull Power Rankings include the Strong Island Sound at number 16. This is the first time all season that the team has been ranked high enough to qualify for the top 16, which has been the list comprised since the start of the season in November. If the season ended today, the Sound would host a playoff game in a single elimination tournament.

While we're on the subject of lists, the Strong Island Sound's Cory Underwood was rated number 14 in Pro Basketball News' Top 20 Minor League Players. This list includes not only ABA players, but CBA and NBDL players as well. Cory was the fourth ABA player picked, behind #7 Sun Yue (Beijing Aoshen), #10 Lawrence Moten (Maryland), and #12 Armon Gilliam (Pittsburgh). This is no small feat considering Moten and Gilliam are former NBA players.

Here are the details from the column:

"14. Cory Underwood, 6-10, PF, (Strong Island Sound - ABA)

Has been a dominant force inside since coming over from Poland a few weeks ago. Draws fouls and is automatic from the free-throw line. Tenacious rebounder."

Cory Underwood and the rest of the Strong Island Sound are going for their third consecutive win this Saturday January 28th 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's College versus the Montreal Matrix. Tickets are available on line, at the door, or at The Athlete's Foot (Roosevelt Field Mall, Sunrise Mall, Smith-Haven Mall, Walt Whitman Mall) or Spicey's Chicken (Riverhead and Bellport).

Regular prices are $12.00. Seniors 55 and over are $8.00. College or high school students receive a $2.00 discount. Military personnel are $6.00.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
