Ask the CEO
January 26, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Lolita W, Richmond, VA: "Do you have internships for college students majoring in sports and leisure management?"
Answer: Lolita and others who have asked the question, thank you. The answer is very definitely yes. Most ABA teams have internships as part of their basic operational plans. The on-the-job experience with an ABA team can be invaluable to you in your education - not only as it relates to sports and leisure (basketball) - but as it relates to business in general. There are many interesting facets to the operation of a professional basketball team including community relations, public relations, game day operations, marketing of sponsorships and tickets, personnel, travel arrangements, tryout camps, radio and television, merchandising and promotion, advertising. Teams are always looking for people to work and to learn in these areas. The best way to become affiliated with an ABA team is to go to the ABA website, check the current and expansion teams. Their email addresses are posted. And send an email to the teams. You will get responses. You will have opportunities. And, upon graduation, with some experience, you will probably get a jumpstart on a great career. Good luck to all of you. If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
