March 25, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (March 25, 2004) - The Titans fell short tonight in their effort to extend their winning streak to what would have been a season-high five games. Greensboro scored four unanswered goals in the last 39 minutes of play to erase a 4-2 Titans lead.
Scott Bertoli led the Titans first period charge with a wrist shot from far circle that beat Generals goaltender Jamie Hodson 3:06 into the first period. While on a power play at 6:44 of the period, Chris Pittman, who came away with a three-point effort tonight (1 goal, 2 assists), beat Hodson low glove-side after redirecting a Bertoli shot from the slot. The Titans and Generals would trade goals, both on the power play, to finish off the first period with the Titans up 3-1.
However, the Titans could not hang on as Greensboro forward Matt Turek led the Generals' attack by deflecting Kevin Grimes' point shot past Titans netminder Peter Hamerlik 12 seconds into the second period. Just 29 seconds later, Matt Zultek chipped in his team-leading 34th goal of the season, which gave the two-goal advantage back to Trenton. From there the Titans would allow four unanswered Generals goals.
Mark Turner cut the Titans' lead to one goal with a shorthanded effort when he intercepted Scott Bertoli's blueline pass and raced in all alone for the break away goal at 14:14 of the second. Matt Elich would then convert a 2-1 on 3:11 later to tie the score 4-4. In the final period, it was Joel Irwin who proved the eventual game-winner with a wrist shot the beat Hamerlik to the glove side.
Hamerlik's record fell to 4-2-0 as a Titan. He stopped 23 of 29 shots tonight as a crowd of 4574 looked on from Sovereign Bank Arena. It was the first time that the Titans have lost at Sovereign Bank Arena when leading after any period.
