CHARLESTON, SC - Ian Strom bashed two more hits on Wednesday, but the Fireflies lost to the RiverDogs in extra innings, 4-3. Strom finished the three-game series in Charleston with seven hits (three of those extra-base hits).
The game was tied, 3-3, with Charleston (56-50) at the plate in the bottom of the 10th. Reliever Keaton Aldridge (L, 0-1) allowed the first two batters to reach before intentionally walking Brandon Wagner. Isiah Gilliam then jolted a base hit up the middle, scoring the game-winning run. It was the second time in three days Columbia fell in the bottom of the 10th. All three games in the series were decided by one run.
Strom raised his batting average from .182 to .238 after going 7-for-12 in the series.
After three scoreless frames, Pablo Olivares started the fourth with a single for Charleston (59-49). Carlos Vidal scored him easily with a triple to the right-center field wall. Columbia attempted to throw Olivares out at the plate, but the relay throw kicked away from the catcher Dan Rizzie and ricocheted into the first-base dugout. Vidal was awarded home, and the home team led, 3-0.
The Fireflies answered with three runs of their own the next half inning. Perez walked the first two batters, then Arnaldo Berrios singled to load the bases. Vinny Siena drove in a pair with a single down the first-base line. Berrios strolled to third, but he wouldn't stay there for long. The next batter, Andres Gimenez, dropped a safety squeeze bunt down the third-base line. The third baseman Dermis Garcia threw Gimenez out at first, but Berrios scored.
Luis Cedeno (W, 5-0) collected another win after doing the same in the series opener on Monday.
Columbia begins a four-game series against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Harol Gonzalez (8-7, 3.70) is scheduled to start for Columbia and he faces southpaw Caleb Baragar (2-7, 4.879)
