Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive got some revenge against the Asheville Tourists in Wednesday night's series finale at Fluor Field, as an excellent performance from Jay Groome gave the Drive a 1-0 shutout victory.
Groome put together the longest outing of his professional career in the Drive's (18-20, 59-48) victory, working six scoreless innings and striking out a career-high eight while allowing just one hit and one walk. He retired the final 14 Asheville (22-17, 51-56) hitters to close out his night.
Asheville's starter Erick Julio (4-10) was solid as well, tossing five innings and surrendering just four hits for the Tourists in defeat.
The one mistake Julio made came in the fifth inning, when Bobby Dalbec pounded a 428-foot solo home run to left-center, his seventh homer of the year. Dalbec led the Drive offense with two hits on the night.
The Drive bullpen protected the lead to salvage the series finale. Robby Sexton struck out three hitters in two and one-third innings, while Juan Florentino nailed down the final two outs to record the save in his Greenville debut.
The Drive will head to Charleston on Thursday to begin a four-game series against the RiverDogs, a New York Yankees affiliate, in the Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. Left-hander Jhonathan Diaz (4-4, 4.66) takes the ball in the opener for the Drive, and the RiverDogs will start right-hander Nick Nelson (2-7, 4.67).
